They’re at it again, and you’re ready to rip your hair out! Doesn’t matter who “they” are, anyone who cares about their job (especially any leader) knows this feeling of frustration at a circumstance or behavior that drives them nuts. This emotion is a very important one that can give you the energy to drive productive change in your organization, but only if it’s validated objectively and tempered with a plan.
So take a walk, go scream in your car, whatever you need to do to feel your feelings completely. Then ask yourself–will this matter in a year, and if so, why? Now most things that drive leaders nuts won’t matter in a week, much less a year. That’s not necessarily a sign to let them go, but putting an aggravation into its proper perspective is a starting point to ensure that your response, if you choose to respond, is thoughtful and proportional to the situation.
